Escape and Evade Codes. These are numbers and letters assigned to air crews in the event that they find themselves behind enemy lines and in trouble. The air crews are trained in their covert use so as to not be discovered by the enemy. These number and letter combinations are unique to the person using them. If the enemy captured you and managed to torture these authenticators out of you, they would not use them. Why? Because there would be no way to determine if the code you gave them was the right code.
In spring 1992, just outside Dong Vai prison in Vietnam, US Satellites picked up images that formed letters and numbers. Those letters and numbers correlated to two pilots shot down in separate incidences during the Vietnam War. Were these two pilots signalling that they were alive and wanted to come home? In 1992? What did the Department of Defense say or do about this?
