November 11, 1998, at 11:00 AM the 49" Annual Veterans' Day service of remembrance. Also during this program, The "Dough Boy," a WWI memorial and long-time resident of the Seattle Center area will be re-dedicated in its third and final location. The City of Seattle has gifted the 13-foot, 3500 pound bronze memorial statue to the Veterans' Memorial Cemetery. It will stand very near the main driveway through the Cemetery. The convenient placement will allow visitors to view the memorial from their cars.

It is fitting that this re-dedication be observed on Veteran's Day. his Day was originally called Armistice Day to commemorate the end of WWI - "the war to end all wars." [and this Veterans' Day marks] the eightieth anniversary of the Armistice.

Evergreen-Washelli hosts an annual Veterans Day service of remembrance to recognize all veterans who served. This year's event is the 49th annual ceremony and will be just inside the main entrance to the Washelli Cemetery (East entrance off Aurora).

Seattle Mayor Paul Schell will participate in the rededication. A Salvation Army Canteen and "Donut Girls" will host your first cup of coffee that day. The Salvation Army Brass Quartet will also provide WWI music before the service and contribute additional music during the service. During WWI, the Salvation Army provided some of the first international volunteer relief help on the battlefield. Ft. Lewis First Corps I Corps will provide a Firing Detail and Color Guard for the traditional "Parade of Colors."

Evergreen-Washelli anticipates a considerable increase in veterans' organization participation this year. If you plan to bring your colors and a wreath, please notify the Evergreen- Washelli Events Coordiaator, Marylou Evans, at 206-362-5200 of your intentions. If you are aware of any WWI veterans still living, or family members, Evergreen-Washelli would appreciate knowing of them so that they may be invited to the ceremonies.

This is a unique opportunity for us to gather in recognition of these men and women's contribution to the peace and freedom we enjoy. Families and friends are invited to join us in expressing our gratitude for all the men and women who serve in the military .

Call Marylou Evans at 206-362-5200 to let her know your plans to participate. Be at the cemetery no later than 10:30 am.

Note: This newletter is aware that the city of Auburn will be hosting its annual Veterans' Day parade, and most likely that Tahoma National Cemetery will have ceremonies also. However, we have not received any specific information on these two events. If you have specifics on these or other events in our area, please pass them along to this newletter NLT Nov 1st. for posting. Email Roger at: bear317@aol.com or fax us the information at 206-933-3266.
