Sent in by the: Veterans News and Information Service

OLYMPIA - The Tahoma National Cemetery Support Group will host the second Veterans Day Service beginning on November 11, at 10:30 a.m., at the VA's Tahoma National Cemetery located near Maple Valley.

Capt. Kim S. Buike, Commanding Officer of the Everett Naval Station will be the guest speaker. The ceremony will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the National Cemetery System.

In 1973, Congress transferred 82 national cemeteries from the Department of the Army to the Federal Veterans Administration. Today, over 130 years after the first national cemeteries were established, more than two million Americans, including veterans of every war and conflict - from the Revolutionary War to the Persian Gulf - have been buried in these cemeteries nationwide.

The Tahoma National Cemetery is located 18600 S.E. 240th in Kent. It is one of 115 national cemeteries operated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and provides burial space for some 90,000 veterans and eligible family members. By the year 2000, the National Cemetery System will operate 119 cemeteries devoted to providing a final resting place for the nation's veterans.
