Statement By Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen About Military Spouse Day
Sent in by Veterans News and Information Services

"I am pleased to designate Friday, May 14, 1999, as Military Spouse Day. Each year, since 1984, the Services have set aside a special day to recognize the innumerable contributions of military spouses."

"These women and men face many challenges as they manage the unique demands military life places on them and their families. Dealing with deployments, family separations, and frequent moves requires special skills and commitment."

"Throughout the history of this country, military spouses have proven that they are up to these challenges. Their support and dedication provide a vital element of stability to servicemembers and to our military communities."

"As we celebrate Military Spouse Day, I offer my personal thanks to every military spouse for a job well done. I encourage commanders to plan special events on or around May 14 to honor the many contributions of our spouses."

"Please join me in saluting these very special people."
