If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man’s life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.

    — Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1857)

(San Francisco, CA) — The Independent Television Service (ITVS) presents KONTUM DIARY: THE JOURNEY HOME, the moving story of an American and a Vietnamese soldier, enemies during the Vietnam War, who are brought together years later through a forgotten diary. The documentary—a follow-up to KONTUM DIARY—records the momentous meeting between American veteran Paul Reed and Nguyen Van Nghia, author of the poetic diary, and follows the two men as they undertake an odyssey of forgiveness and reconciliation.

KONTUM DIARY: THE JOURNEY HOME will air on PBS over Memorial Weekend (check local listings). Narrated by Peter Coyote, the film was directed by Stevan M. Smith, and produced by Stevan M. Smith and Phil Sturholm for ITVS with funds provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and other funders.
