Operation Just Cause...                                              ...for as long as it takes
WASHINGTON, D.C. "We're certainly glad that the Clinton-GoreAdministration has finally gotten the message about their neglect ofveterans," House Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Stump (R-AZ)saidMonday "But it's not enough," Stump said. "Congress and the entire veterans'community rejected the Clinton-Gore VA budget as inadequate the momentitcame out February 1. Congress identified a $1.7 billion shortfall in thebudget resolution on April 14. The new funding suddenly discovered byVicePresident Gore is at least $700 million below what VA will need to servethehealth care needs of veterans." "And coming today, when the House Appropriations Subcommittee is takingupVA funding, this announcement by Vice President Gore is politicalopportunism at its worst," he said. Chairman Stump said the Clinton-Gore Administration has spent sevenmonths"flaunting its contempt for veterans with a disastrous VA budget. Now,likeHillary Clinton's long-lost law firm billing records, a billion dollarsforveterans appear out of nowhere, like magic." "Just a coincidence? Not likely. Not with this Administration's trackrecord," Stump said. "To anyone paying attention the strategy isobvious.Scare the daylights out of veterans and intimidate VA officials. Then they have this phony revelation about more veterans' spending, hoping agratefulveterans'community will want to kiss the same hand that's been slappingthemaround all year." "Rather than work with Congress on behalf of veterans, theAdministrationsat out the whole year just so Vice President Gore could engage in thisblatantly partisangrandstanding," Stump said, "just as veterans' organizations are headingoffto their annual conventions. Veterans should not be taken in after beingtreated so shabbily all year."
