"This 43-acre parcel of land reveals a story in American history that spans from 1776 until the last military occupation as a U.S. Coast Guard Station during World War II."

The following links tell the story of the fateful voyage of the Mercury-Liberty Bell 7. The space capsule was lost at sea on July 21, 1961. A project is underway to recover the capsule from the bottom of the ocean floor, for research and will be put on puplic display at the Kansas Space and Cosmosphere. The pilot of that mission was Air Force Lt. Col. Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom, a Korean War Veteran.
