Larry Gatlin to Return to USO Stage with Tour to Balkans, Persian Gulf

Washington, DC (July 12, 1999) Larry Gatlin, country superstar and USO Tour veteran, will be making another USO Tour to perform for service men and women in the Balkans and the Persian Gulf. The July 13-31 USO Tour will be sponsored by Armed Forces Entertainment, as well as USO World Partnership Sponsors AT&T, USAA, Nicorette/NicoDerm CQ, and Yahoo!.

Larry Gatlin will be making his fifth USO Tour, having performed for troops in Somalia and Kenya in December 1993, Haiti in October 1994, the Balkans in December 1995, and Japan in December 1996. This tour will make stops in Oman, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Hungary, Macedonia, Albania, and Bosnia. Gatlin will perform free shows, tour military facilities, and sign autographs for the troops.

"As always, I’m really looking forward to my visit with our troops. I am grateful for the USO and to the host countries for letting me go," said Gatlin. "I’m more grateful every day for the wonderful job that our military men and women do for us."

General Carl E. Mundy, President and CEO of World USO, said, "the USO is very lucky to have dedicated performers, such as Larry Gatlin, return to the USO stage again and again in support of our men and women in uniform."

A native of Odessa, Texas, Larry Gatlin has made his mark not just as a country singer and songwriter, but also as a humanitarian. His songs have been recorded by artists such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Johnny Mathis, and Dottie West, and he has recorded numerous albums and country hits. His single "Broken Lady" won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1976. He has also starred on Broadway as Will Rogers in "The Will Rogers Follies," written and produced the musical "Texas Flyer," performed for Presidential events for Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George Bush, and continues to make speaking appearances nationwide, educating students about drug and alcohol abuse.

For more than 58 years, the USO has provided programs bringing "a touch of home" to our service men and women abroad. The USO is a Congressionally chartered, nonprofit organization, receiving no direct government funding. The USO is supported by World Partnership Sponsors, AT&T, USAA, Nicorette/NicoDerm CQ, and Yahoo!, corporate donors such as Northwest Airlines, Coca-Cola, and Anheuser-Busch, the United Way and Combined Federal Campaign (CFC-0600), as well as contributions from individuals.
