America's Longest Candlelight Vigil
June 14, 2001

Submitted by Steve Golding

The Vigil and Freedom Ride were not taking place until later in the afternoon, so I slept until 10AM and decided to eat and take a look around. I opened the curtains to see this lake view.

I went to the front desk to inquire as to where Hesky Park was so I could recon it and find out where a good vantage point would be. It turns out that Divine Providence was even kinder to me. Hesky Park was across the street from the Chase House where I was staying.

I had a few hours to kill, so I went to get something to eat at George's Diner where they make the best biscuit gravy over toast that I've ever had! On the advice of some of the people that I encountered at George's, I drove over to where they run a scenic train from and took it to Weirs. The train, called "The Hobo Express" is something out of the old west, with kerosene lamps and no air conditioning. It runs back and forth between Meredith and Weirs, along the lake. The ride is a pleasant fifteen minutes.

So I get off the train and get some lemonade on this, another humid day. I am confronted with a carnival-like atmosphere. Every type of motorcycle-type vendor you could think of. Live bands ranging from one person with a guitar to a 5 piece band all singing either pop-rock or country-rock.

The only other place that I have seen this many motorcycles was during Memorial Day at Rolling Thunder in Washington.

I know, doesn't look big now.

But here it starts looking. . .
. . .more like Rolling Thunder!

I stayed in Weirs for about an hour and then headed back to Meredith so I could be at Hesky Park in time for the opening ceremonies. I stopped by the hotel, showered, changed and went across the street to Hesky Park just as people started milling about.
