Important Announcement--Brother Down
sent in by Chuck *Doc* Stewart

This is a very difficult message to write. I've received a message from Gunny that our brother and very good friend to all, Col. Ted Guy ex-POW is quite ill. I do not know any more at this time but will keep all updated as the news comes in.

Those who have been on the net for any length of time either know or know of Ted Guy and those of us who have had the pleasure of corresponding with him know just what this gutsy human being is all about. I'm asking all who receive this to take a minute to say a prayer for Ted and I'm also asking that you send him a card.

If you cannot afford the 33 cents and the price of a card, tell me, and I will personally send him a card for you. Ted is a remarkable human being, a brother who's walked the walk and definately one who's talked the talk. One who doesn't deserve in any way what he is going through. I never ask much of anyone on my list... but I AM asking you now... to please respond to this message by sending a card with your best wishes to Ted.

Let him know we are here for him. Please do it as a personal favor to me if for no other reason. If you don't know him you can visit his sites:

Col. Ted W. Guy, S.R.O and Hawk's Page

His address is:
Col. Ted Guy, (USAF ret.) Former PoW
HRC 2, Box 265B,
Sunrise Beach, MO. 65079

My personal thanks for answering the call of this message with a prayer and a card.

God Bless,
Doc

More on Ted Guy from Gunny:

To all OJC members and supporters:

Our co-founder, Colonel Ted Guy, former POW, holder of more decorations than anyone I know and a good friend, is very ill. He and his family need the prayers and support of everyone who cares.

His health problems are directly related to the harsh treatment he endured while a prisoner of the North Vietnamese. The situation is tenuous at best.

Ted is the reason there is an OpJustCause. He was with me from the beginning. He is the one who inspired me to start this thing of ours. He cannot receive calls or email but prayers, cards and good wishes will do his family a world of good.

I love Ted like a father. He has been a good friend and he is the most dedicated activist in the POWMIA movement. There is no more courageous (or ornery) warrior anywhere in the world. While a POW, he spent 90% of his time in solitary because he continued to give the enemy a hard time. We cannot afford to lose him. We are not ready for that.

I am not ready for that!

PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE!

Don't let Ted down...he would never let anyone of us down.

Let him and his family know how much we care about him and need him.

Ted greets his family at AFB on March 24, 1973

Send cards and letters to:

Ted and Linda Guy
HRC 2 Box 265B
Sunrise Beach, MO., 65079.

If you can't do it right away, do it tomorrow but in the meantime, email your message to me. I will print it out and deliver it to his family.

And if you believe in the power of prayer, pray now...They are praying for him in churches all over North Jersey, but there can never be too much prayer in a case like this.

Forgive the lack of my usual eloquence...there is no time. BTW, if by some chance you aren't familiar with Ted's story, go to:
Hawk's Page

Thank you,
Gunny

Update on Colonel Ted Guy
sent in by Chuck *Doc* Stewart

Great news today... and who says prayers don't work!!!

Former POW Colonel Swede Larson, USAF Ret. says...

The news is very good on Ted Guy. Your prayers DID help. His wife said they thought they had lost him on Wednesday, but the Doctors found a new antibiotic that WORKED, and is bringing the fever down. They also took out the Stint in his chest, that was causing some of the problem.

Linda said he was on the road to recovery. He still has to deal with the Myelodysplasia, but they hoped to have him released in about a week. Linda was extremely grateful for all the prayers and concern everyone has shone. . ."Swede" Larson

There is now a guestbook set up to send well wishes to Colonel Ted Guy:

Another Brother in Need of Prayers
Also in from Doc

Dear Friends and Family,

On Thursday, Jan. 28, my Dad (Gary Gentzler a/k/a Gunnyg) was admitted into York Hospital due to kidney failure which is directly related to the heart failure he was diagnosed with 10 years ago. At this point, the Doctors are running several tests and compiling data from them to determine what will be their next step.

Unfortunately, the outlook is not good. Depending on the test results, there are really only 2 options:

1) to administer Dopamine, a STRONG drug which is supposed to "kick-start" the heart, which will in turn get the kidneys working again; or

2) Dialysis. This option would only be used as a last resort. The Doctor told us that a person with my Dads heart condition is usually not a candidate for dialysis.

His Doctor does not recommend it. We have also consulted with a kidney specialist who also believes that dialysis is not a good idea.

I am e-mailing you tonight to request your prayers. Gary needs all the prayers he can get!!!! We believe that he is in God's hands and that whatever happens is God's will.

Thank you for your prayers,
Tonja (Gunnyg's daughter)

Happy New Year!
We are now into the last year of the 20th century. The Moonduster Chronicles is a year old and many things have happened in that year. Operation Just Cause has grown in numbers and in strength. We continue to demand a full accounting of our POW/MIA's. As this century comes to a close, we will face the new Millennium as a family. We, as a family, are bound together by our determination to get the answers. We strive together as a whole with loyalty and dedication to those we left behind.

Doing the Operation Just Cause Newsletter these past six months has been the most wonderful experience for me. I hope that I will be permitted to continue putting this Newsletter together in 1999 and beyond. I want to take this opportunity to personally thank those who have given me the encouragement and confidence to do it. I will be forever in their debt for allowing me to help out in Operation Just Cause.

Thanks to Gunny, Doc, Cheryl, Dennis, Karl, Willie, Steve, Chris, Christina, Marsha, and Robert.
Thanks!
Barb Malone

To The Readers:
For the first issue of 1999, I would like to present the readers with some highlights of past issues of "The Moonduster Chronicles" regarding Operation Just Cause and the POW/MIA Issue.

"The Year in Review" follows The January 1999 edition of "The Moonduster Chronicles".

The topic for the 'Featured Stories' section of this month's Newsletter will be "New Years Resolutions for Our State Representatives". I would like OJC members to send in a list of New Years Resolutions they would like to see made by their State Representatives regarding the POW/MIA issue.

"From the day we started OJC, I have been asked repeatedly to state my position on John McCain. Now that Senator McCain is officially evaluating his chances of running for president, I have posted an opinion at Message From Gunny on John McCain. Draw your own conclusions"...Gunny

Another Important Announcement From Gunny
POW/MIA Internet Blackout Day

"On February 1, 1999, Operation Just Cause will be joining with the POWMIA Freedom Fighters and other POWMIA activist groups in a Blackout day. Please go to POW/MIA Internet Blackout Day, or click on the graphic at the top of the page for further details and instructions. Lady Jen has provided pages and graphics in zip format to make this as easy as possible to accomplish. I believe this is an excellent opportunity for all POWMIA activists to demonstrate our unity with our heroes and with each other. This WILL help make a difference and I encourage everyone to participate."

Many have asked how they can participate if they do not have web pages. My advice is to use your imagination and do something extra on that day to spread the word: get together with other members and activists and place an ad in your local paper. Call your local radio or TV station and ask them to have a minute of silence on behalf of the missing. Pass out POWMIA ribbons. Whatever you can think of. I hesitate to make a recommendation because when I do that, some folks think it's the only thing that can be done. I encourage you to do whatever practical comes to your mind. The best ideas we've ever had, have come from our members, not from me. And that includes the first Adopted POW webpage which was done by Tipi.

Thanks, Gunny

Announcement
The Moonduster Chronicles will be closed on Monday, February 1, 1999, in observance of POW/MIA Internet Black Out Day. Normal operation will resume on Tuesday, February 2, 1999. Thank you!

    Special
"The Moonduster Chronicles' Year in Review

    January 1998

In January 1998, in the first issue of The Operation Just Cause Newsletter, Gunny Fallon and Chuck "Doc" Stewart gave us their thoughts on Operation Just Cause. I feel that their words from a year ago are appropriate for 1999 also. To read what Gunny and Doc had to say, please go to:
    "The Executive Board's Thoughts"

    February 1998

In our February 1998 issue, OJC members expressed their thoughts on being involved with Operation Just Cause. One contributor graciously allowed his poem to be published. Every so often, I like to read the innermost thoughts poets put into their writing to remind me of why we are all involved in Operation Just Cause. Perhaps you would like to give yourself a reminder by reading
    "A POW's Prayer"

In Feburary, people were asked to send in their thoughts on their visit to the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall in Washington, DC. I read with particular interest a story sent in by Dennis, a Vietnam Veteran.
It was called How the Wall Moved Me

    March 1998

In March of 1998, Joni Terrio asked three Veterans for their thoughts about the POW/MIA situation. As Joni explained, these three men served their country and have earned the respect of all of us that enjoy the freedom we have in this great country of ours. It was an informative and interesting article.
Please take the time to read: Our Veterans Speak Out

And this is a tribute to three men that lost their lives in Vietnam:
    Three Fallen Friends

    April, May, and June 1998

In our issue dedicated to Memorial Day 1998, there were many contributions from OJC members telling how they celebrated Memorial Day. That issue also included the following announcement concerning the flying of the POW/MIA Flag

Here are two announcements regarding Memorial Day 1998 celebrations.

And here is one of my favortie poems that appeared in the June 1998 issue by Dennis

Since joining OJC, I have learned a lot from Vietnam Veterans themselves about the Vietnam War and their feelings on the subject. The majority of them are able to express their thoughts in words as no one else can. Here is one example, a poem written by a Vietnam Veteran:
    New Found Hope

    July 1998

On June 29, 1998, we found out officially that Michael Blassie was positively identified as the
"Unknown Soldier". To find out more on this story, please visit one of 'Doc's' pages,
    Vietnam Unknown Soldier

I heard a story last year at the 9th Annual Ride for Freedom "98" sponsored by the Friends of the Forgotten at the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial that I have placed in several issues of the OJC Newsletter. I thought it was a story worth hearing over and over again. I think you will, too. Please take the time to read this story about a former POW, a truly courageous and patriotic man:
    Honoring the American Flag.

"Freedom Is Not Free" was the theme for the July issue of "The Moonduster Chronicles".
OJC members were asked to submit articles and poems on what the Fourth of July meant to them. I enjoyed reading the different views everyone had on the subject. However, everyone agreed that this country's veterans paid the price for our freedom. If you would like to read the submissions, go to:
    "Freedom Is Not Free"

    August 1998

In July of 1998, "the House backed President Clinton's decision to promote trade with Vietnam, the former Asian enemy. The decision to support Clinton and the Jackson Vanick Waiver, as it applies to Vietnam was approved." You can read the full story about the waiver here:
    The Jackson Vanick Waiver

The National Alliance of Families Meeting took place June 18-20, 1998.
Steve Golding attended that meeting and sent in this report for the August issue:
    National Alliance of Families Meeting

    September 1998

The following is a special piece written by Dennis Johnson that appeared in the September issue. That issue was dedicated to POW/MIA Recognition Day. Dennis submitted it to help remind us to think of POW/MIA's every day, not just on POW/MIA Recognition Day.
It is called Nobody Gets Left Behind

Also, readers were asked to tell how they became involved in OJC. Here is what they told us:
"How I Became A Member of Operation Just Cause"

All but three states issued POW/MIA Recognition Day Proclamations in September of 1998. As POW/MIA Recognition Day arrived, these three states had not issued the proclamations:
    Arkansas, Hawaii, and South Dakota.

    October 1998

October is Agent Orange Awareness Month. In last October's issue, I was given a list of links to Agent Orange sites. Here is the URL for anyone who would like to visit these websites to find out about Agent Orange and to see how you can help.
    Agent Orange Awareness Links

October's theme was based on a song from the '60's by The Birds called "Turn, Turn, Turn". I asked people to submit something using one of the lines from the song. Here are a few of those poems .

"A Time for War and a Time for Peace"

"A Time to Grieve/A Time to Dance"

There were two updates sent in by the Advocacy And Intelligence Index For Prisoners Of War/Missing In Action, Inc. regarding the POW/MIA issue:

Vietnam's Ability to Account for Missing Americans

    Status of the POW/MIA Issue

    November 1998

There was also a major development back in November in the matter of POWs believed taken to the Soviet Union. It revolved around an important KGB Document. To read the story, please go to:

    POW/MIA Forum/Kremlin Witholds Report on American POW's

November's issue was a tribute to Veterans Day and Thanksgiving combined. OJC Members sent in their thoughts on what it meant to "Give Thanks to Veterans". Here are a few of those submissions:

    Thanksgiving Prayer
    by Christina Sharik

    Veterans Day
    by Marsha Burks Megehee

    Veterans Day
    by Dennis Johnson

Readers were also asked to tell us what Veterans Day meant to them. Here is what a few people had to say about the day that honors Veterans everywhere:

What a Veterans Means to Me

    Gratitude

There was a list of links for Veterans Day for anyone to learn about veterans and patriotism. I think it was a great list of links to view at anytime of the year. I think you will, too.

    Veterans Day Links

And here is a link for Veterans Day Resources:

Veterans Day 1998: A Resource Guide

    December 1998

Keeping with the holiday season, the December issue had a "Christmas Wish" theme. People sent in what they would wish could come true if they were granted one wish. Here are a few of those wishes:

My Christmas Wish for All of Mankind

    My Christmas Wish

I want to also say that everyone at OJC has two very special families in their thoughts and prayers for the coming year. The familly of POW/MIA James Thomas and the family of Roy Benavidez, a Vietnam veteran who in 1981received the Medal of Honor for saving eight fellow Green Berets. Mr. Thomas' wife and Roy Benavidez passed away last month. To read about these two very special people, go to the

Feel free to print out and distribute any or all parts of "The Moonduster Chronicles". There are those individuals without access to the Internet who might enjoy reading it. Prime examples of places frequented by veterans are VFW's and VA HealthCare Facilities. We may also have 'offline' friends who would want to adopt a POW/MIA, as a group or individually, that are unaware of Operation Just Cause. Thanks!
