1 January


- 1776 - General George Washington unveiled the Grand Union Flag, the first national flag in America after King George III of England called on American forces to surrender.

- 1863 - President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation formally freeing all slaves in the Confederate States.

- 1975 - John Ehrlichman, H.R. Haldeman and John Mitchell were found guilty of obstruction in the Watergate investigation.

4 January


- 1790 - United States President George Washington delivered the first State of the Union address.

- 1861 - The Confederate States of America were formed, consisting of South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Louisiana.

- 1951 - In the Korean War, the North Koreans and Chinese communists captured the Southern capital of Seoul.

17 January


- 1773 - The Resolution, under Captain James Cook, became the first ship to cross the Antarctic Circle.

- 1893 - Rutherford Hayes, the 19th United States president, died. He was the only president of the time to be elected by an electoral commission following a disputed ballot.

- 1991 - In the Gulf War, United States-led allied forces launched "Operation Desert Storm," an air and missile offensive against Iraqi positions and installations in Iraq and occupied Kuwait. .

- 1781 - In America, the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Continental Government appointed the first consular officer. Thomas Barclay took up his post as vice-consul in Paris at a salary of $1,000.

- 1908 - The Sullivan Ordinance, enacted in New York City today, made it illegal for women to smoke. Even though it was against the law, some women continued to smoke.

- 1997 - "Colonel" Tom Parker, the manager who helped guide Elvis Presley's rise from young hopeful to the king of rock 'n' roll, died.

28 January


- 1878 - The first daily, collegiate newspaper in the United States, "The Yale News" was published for the first time.

- 1902 - Steel industrialist Andrew Carnegie established the Carnegie Institution in Washington.

- 1982 - Italian anti-terrorist police rescued United States Brigadier General James Dozier from Red Brigades guerrillas who had kidnapped him 42 days earlier.
