WASHINGTON, D.C. - Chairman Bob Stump (R-AZ) introduced six new committee members at the 106th Congress organizational meeting of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs Wednesday afternoon.
The four Republicans are Jim Hansen of Utah, Howard "Buck" McKeon of California, Jim Gibbons of Nevada, and Mike Simpson of Idaho. The two Democrats are Ronnie Shows of Mississippi and Shelley Berkley of Nevada.
Congressman Lane Evans (D-IL) returns as Ranking Democratic Member of the Committee.
Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) will serve again as Committee Vice Chairman.
Congressman Cliff Stearns (R-FL) returns as chairman of the Subcommittee on Health, Jack Quinn (R-NY) as chairman of the Subcommittee on Benefits, and Terry Everett (R-AL) as chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigation. Ranking Democrats on those subcommittees will be Luis Gutierrez (IL) on Health, Bob Filner (CA) on Benefits, and Corrine Brown (FL) on Oversight and Investigations.
Representatives Simpson, McKeon and Shows will take seats on the Subcommittee on Health. Representatives Hansen, Gibbons, and Berkley will serve on the Subcommittee on Benefits.
Mr. Hansen is entering his tenth term in Congress after four terms in the Utah House of Representatives, the last term as Speaker. Hansen served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was an independent insurance agent and land development company executive before entering public service. Mr. McKeon was a businessman, school district president, and mayor before his 1992 election to Congress. He was the president of his freshman class. Mr. Gibbons was a hydrologist, geologist, attorney, commercial pilot and airlines executive before his 1996 election to Congress. He also served three terms in the Nevada State Assembly. A colonel in the Air National Guard, Gibbons is a decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars. Mr. Simpson is serving his first term in Congress. A dentist by profession, Simpson served three terms as Speaker of the Idaho House of Representatives.
Representative Shows served as a transportation commissioner, state senator, and circuit clerk before his election to Congress last November. Before entering public service he was a teacher and basketball coach. Representative Berkley served in the Nevada state legislature and as a regent of Nevada's higher education system.
