Veterans Shortchanged By President’s VA Budget

Background
The President’s FY 2000 budget for the VA has been submitted to Congress and once again it is clear that veterans are not a priority of this Administration. Under the current budget, funding for veterans medical care and other programs will be essentially frozen at the same level as was provided over the last three fiscal years despite the availability of a huge budget surplus! The VFW estimates that the Administration’s health care request falls $3 billion short of what is needed to effectively provide for the health-care needs of our nations veterans. Also, veterans claims are backlogged and delayed due to staff cuts and inadequate funding which adversely affect the quality and timeliness of veterans’ claims processing.

Status:
Congress has not as of yet released its budget recommendations for the VA. The VFW testified before the full VA committee as well as the VA subcommittee with respect to this inadequate budget. As in the past years, we expect the battle over the VA budget to be long and protracted. We will keep you informed of future developments.

Action Needed:
Write a brief letter to the congress member from your district expressing your dissatisfaction with the president’s VA budget proposal. Let the member know that it is up to Congress to make veterans a national priority. Request that your member of Congress take steps to increase the VA funding when it comes before the House Appropriations Committee.

The attached is a list of House Appropriation Committee members. Write to the congress member from your state and/or district and tell them that the Administration’s VA budget is inadequate to meet the health care needs of our nation’s veterans . Request that the congress member take steps to increase the VA funding when it comes before the Appropriations Committee for consideration.

The suggested address style is:

The Honorable _________
United States House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515
