Healing Wounds:  The Moving Walls
Dennis Johnson

"IN HONOR OF THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES WHO SERVED IN THE VIETNAM WAR. THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES AND OF THOSE WHO REMAIN MISSING ARE INSCRIBED IN THE ORDER THEY WERE TAKEN FROM US."

Preamble of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial

This is a series of articles about what has been dubbed "The Moving Wall."

It is a half-size replica of the Washington, D.C. Vietnam Veterans Memorial. When John Devitt attended the 1982 dedication in Washington, he felt the healing power of "The Wall". He vowed to take that healing to persons who did not have the opportunity to go to Washington.

The first Moving Wall was built by John Devitt, Norris Shears, Gerry Haver, and other Vietnam veteran volunteers. It went on display in Tyler, Texas in October of 1984. Three of these Moving Walls now travel the USA from April to November, spending about a week at each site.

The statements above were taken from the Moving Wall homepage. What it doesn't tell you is the impact it can have on people. As mentioned, not everyone can get to our nation's capitol. Perhaps more importantly, it serves as a continual source of renewal, a reminder of what has become so important to us here at OJC. We mourn the loss of so many fine
Americans and, above all, we seek an honorable resolution to the fate of our missing heroes.

The Moving Wall schedule will be posted here. The itinerary will be broken into 3 and listed as Schedule "A", "B", and "C". If a Moving Wall is going to be in your area, contact local veteran's organizations. They are usually involved and should be aware of any last minute schedule changes.

If a location is posted for a time frame, the 'visit' has been confirmed. No location usually means a visit plans are tentative for a location. Postings here will be for the current month and the next quarter.
