Do you know anyone in Virginia that would be interested in getting a POW/MIA Logo license Plate? I sponsored a bill last year for Virginia to make them. It is my responsibility to collect the first 350 pre-paid applications. Can you help???

WWII Veterans Run -- August 17 to 23
Sent in by Cindy Lou

August 17

"I had a great day running today. We left out of Mankato, KS and are running towards Belleville, KS. We came back to Mankato are are staying in a city park with free electrical hook-ups. This will be the second night, free of charge. We had a visitor. I was very honored to meet with him. He is a navy corpsman with the 4th marine division on Iwo Jima. His name is Gerald Boyles. His daughter, Gloria Garman, did the article for the Mankato Newspaper yesterday. They came by our RV this afternoon. I showed him some sand I have for Iwo Jima. I could have stayed and visited with him for 3 or 4 more days. He is a very nice fellow. He's 78 years old, still plays the guitar, and still farms. Tomorrow, after the run, we are going down to Lindsborg, KS to meet with Jeanette Floher. She is the mother of David L. Krieg, the navy corpsman killed next to me on his first day in Vietnam, May 15, 1967 serving with India 3rd Battalion/5th Marines. 4 hours after that, I was wounded and sent back home to Great Lakes Naval Hospital. He were only with us for 5 hours. We were working on a buddy from my fire team, Fred Wesche, from Pennsylvania. Wesche survived. I did a run from St. Paul, MN to Illinois in 1994. We had a ceremony at Great Lakes Hospital, and Jeanette came up. Charles Lindberg presented her with the flag. We are also supposed to have an interview with the Lindsborg Newspaper. We will be meeting with one of David's friends from his hometown, Bill Lindholm. He was wounded in Vietnam and escorted David's body home. Outside of that, everything is going well, and we are right on schedule. I had a call last night... (message was cut off.)"

August 18

"We ran on Highway 36 today, and did very well. We are just outside of Belleville, KS. We drove to Lindsborg, KS to meet Jeannette and John Floher. Jeannette is the mother of David L. Krieg. [See yesterdays log.] David is a driving force for this run to honor all veterans. We are staying at his house. We visited his grave this afternoon, and met Bill Lindholm, a hometown friend of David's. Bill was wounded in the marine corps, 3rd Battalion/5th Marines. He accompanied David's body home. It is an honor to be at this house. We will continue up to Belleville and run in. We will switch drivers, also. Carol Buettner did an excellent job driving. My daughter Melissa will be driver #6. We will continue on through the great state of Kansas. This has been a very honorable day. Gotta Run!"

August 19

"We stayed overnight at the Floher residence in Lindsborg, KS. We left this morning and ran on highway 81, south of Salina, KS. There were really wide shoulders. There was cool weather and some rain here. It was Carol's last day driving. She did an excellent job cooking, cleaning, and backing-up. Today we are waiting to rendezvous with my daughter Melissa. She is driver #6. Jim Mason, from Vietnam Veterans Chapter 639, will be driving Melissa down, and then bringing Carol back to Minnesota. So, we are waiting for them now in Belleville, KS. Monday morning, Melissa and I will be taking off and heading East. So far things are going well. Thanks again Carol for driving! All of my drivers have been fabulous. We haven't' even gotten lost yet! Gotta Run!"

August 20

"We switched drivers today. Melissa, my oldest daughter, is taking over as driver #6. Carol, my cousin, did an outstanding job of driving for 2 weeks. Melissa was driven from Minnesota from James Mason. We performed the ceremonial changing of the keys, and Jim drove Carol back to Minnesota. Melissa and I went to mass at St. Edwards, and had a blessing by Father Moader. I also had a radio interview by Rod Utech with Freedom Radio. After I was done with my interview, I listened to an interview of Charles Lindberg. It was an honor to be able to listen to him talk about the first flag raising at Iwo Jima. Tomorrow we will be heading down highway 36 for Washington, KS. Gotta Run!"

August 21

"It's Monday, again. It was Melissa's fist day driving. I want to thank Carol for training her in and doing an outstanding job of driving! Today, we continued down highway 36 to the city of Washington, KS. We ere stopped by Steve Breeding who was a Vietnam veteran in the 2nd Battalion/1st Marines as a machine gunner. He gave me a Vietnam Veterans rehab medallion to put on my flagpole. I gave him a picture of Charles Lindberg. I was also pulled over by Highway Patrolman 2nd Lieutenant Greg Kyser. We talked for a bit. We are now in the Washington RV park. Art Jones, Jr. let us stay here for a minimal charge with full hook-ups. His dad, Art Jones, Sr. was on the Remagan Bridge in WWII with the 9th armored. He also served in Korea and passed away one year ago. I had a visit from a man here in the RV park named William Lull.. He is a WWII Navy Veteran from California who served in the South Pacific. I had an interview with the Washington County. They will be sending some home. I just had a macaroni and cheese and hot dog dinner. I'm all ready for tomorrow. Gotta Run!"

August 22

"Melissa and I had a good run on highway 36 today. I was running on narrow shoulders heading East into Marysville. There were wider shoulders heading West, so we actually ran West into Marysville, KS. We got a lot of honks and waves along the way. Melissa did a very good job. We got up this morning around 4 am to lightning and thunderstorms, but those subsided. I talked to Marysville police officers, and dropped off flyers at the Marysville VFW. We are parked in a city park, free of charge. I just was in the city pool here. Also, we have an interview lined up with the Marysville Advocate tomorrow. We will be hitting it early in the morning tomorrow. I'm not to sure what the temperature is, but it is getting more and more humid as we get farther East. Thanks to you and the committee back home, we have gotten half way across America, and it has been a complete honor. Melissa is making spaghetti now. Gotta Run!"

August 23

"We are in Seneca, KS now. Last night we slept at the Marysville, KS public park. There were trains running all night long, every half-hour. This morning, we met Joanne Shum with the Marysville newspaper. She took my picture. Along highway 36, we met Dwayne Holtas and Craig Polson, a retired Navy Veteran. These 2 gentlemen got Charles Lindberg pictures and T-shirts. Craig has a relative that is neighbors with Charles Lindberg in Richfield, MN. We also went to the Seneca VFW and met a few members. One fellow was a World War II Veteran, and another was a Korean Veteran. I also met with the Seneca Tribune for an interview. Their photographer, Matt Diehl, will take our picture tomorrow morning as we run out. Today is August 23rd. It is my brother Joe's birthday! Happy Birthday to Joe! My son, Matt, is in Law Enforcement school now, Jenny is back from Alaska, and Missy is right here doing a great job driving. We went to a library and saw the Guest Book online! Thank you to everyone for you support! Gotta Run!"

August 24

"We had a good day running today down highway 36. We are at the Hiawatha Country Square RV Park in Hiawatha, KS. I heard that is got up around 100° today. We had a visit form the Seneca Tribune. The photographer came out early this morning and took a lot of pictures. Also, a State Highway Patrolman stopped by to talk. Tomorrow we will get some company from the committee back home. The father son team of Jim and Jim Martin will be coming down to install graphics on the RV. The graphics were donated by Vomela. We are putting them on now instead of back in California, because I was running to fast, and they were unable to catch up with me. The two Jims will also personally escort Mel Olsen, my next driver, #7, down to Kansas! Melissa is doing a great job. She cooks great, and is handling the 28 foot RV like she is an old trucker. Every day continues to be an honor. People are honking all the way along the line. We will continue East tomorrow. Gotta Run!"

August 25

"We are at Country Squire RV Park in Hiawatha, KS. There was quite an extreme fog today, so I didn't run on the highways. It was too dangerous. Instead, I ran around town. The fog didn't lift until past 11:30! Country Squire is letting us stay free of charge for another night with hookups. The Jim Martins and Mel Olsen are coming down to put graphics on the RV. Jim, Jim, and Mel: there is a Powwow going on here in town at the casino. We will stay at the site here. You guys should find a room before you come to see us. The hotels are filling up. Aside from that, it's about 100° and we just settled in for the day. Talk to you later! Gotta Run!"

August 26

"Hi! We had a good run today. We stopped just outside of Atchison, KS. Jim Martin, Sr. and Jim Martin, Jr. put most of the graphics on the RV last night with help from Mel Olsen and my daughter Missy. When I was running today, they put the rest of them on while the RV was stopped. They all did a great job. It looks really professional. If you see us, stop and talk! We are hard to miss now! I had an interview with a radio station today, and I have one tomorrow. Missy will leave for Minnesota tomorrow. She has done a great job driving. Mel will take over, and he will be with me for 2 weeks. We went to eat at the Time Out restaurant and met a really nice waitress. Hi Danielle! She got a T-shirt and a picture of Charles Lindberg. Talk to you all later! Gotta Run!"

August 27

"This morning the Jims took off back to St. Paul along with my daughter Melissa. She was driver #6. Thank you for doing an outstanding job. It was fun to be with you. She did a great job cooking, too! The Jims did some PR work. I will have some newspaper and radio interviews. They did a great job with the banners, too! Missy trained in Mel, and he caught on really quick. We visited Amelia Airheart's birth place today. We will be leaving for Leavenworth, KS tomorrow. Also tomorrow, we will be attending the Marine Corps Council meeting in Kansas City. We are doing very well, and had a very nice Sunday off. I went to church at St. Joseph's Church here in Atchison, and got a blessing. Gotta Run!"

*Editor's Note

While trying to occupy my children this summer, I have been doing educational activities with them. I was searching online for subject matter and stumbled across a website that teaches American History. One of the websites gives a detailed history of the Vietnam War. It is a very interesting website and it has a large segment on the antiwar movement. Like it or not, it is a part of our history and one of the things those of us who grew up in the 1960's remember when people talk about the Vietnam War. They have a message board where you can read and post messages about the antiwar movement. Please visit the following website and if you have any thoughts or opinions on how the Vietnam War is explained, feel free to send them to me. I will post them here in "The Moonduster Chronicles".

Thanks,

This Month's Trivia

Francis Scott Key wrote the words to "The Star-Spangled Banner" on the back on an envelope.
What is the source of the music for it?

The music is from an old English drinking song called "To Anacreon in Heaven."

The expression "the whole nine yards" comes from WWII aircraft whose ammunition belts were 27 feet long. When you used your entire ammo belt on a target, you exhausted "the whole nine yards."
