1 August


1498 - Christopher Columbus landed on mainland America but, thinking it was an island, called it Isla Santa.

1798 - The British fleet under Lord Nelson defeated the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile, thwarting Napoleon's conquest of the Middle East.

1976 - The 21st Olympic Games in Montreal ended on this date. They were the most expensive and controversial in Olympic history. Thirty-two nations withdrew from the games, six East European athletes defected to Canada, a Soviet athlete was dismissed for cheating, three other participants were disqualified for steroid use, and a Soviet sprinter reported a death threat.

4 August


1693 - It is believed that a monk named Dom Perignon invented champagne at the Benedictine Abbey of Hautvillers in the region of Champagne, northern France. He made the first champagne by re-fermenting a certain wine in the spring and then placing it in strong, sealed bottles so that the wine would become sparkling. Dom Perignon was the Cellar master for 47 years until his death in 1715.

1892 - Andrew and Abby Borden were axed to death in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts. Lizzie Borden, Andrew Borden's daughter from a previous marriage, was accused of the killings, but acquitted at trial.

1997 - North Korea handed over the remains of four United States soldiers killed during the 1950-1953 Korean War.

19 August


1561 - Mary Queen of Scots arrived in Scotland to assume the throne after spending 13 years in France.

1856 - In Brooklyn, New York, Gail Borden patented his process for condensed milk. Borden’s is still in business and is one of the largest dairy product concerns in the world.

1991 - In a military coup that shook the world, a coalition of hard-line communists removed Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. The coup came partly as a result of Gorbachev's willingness to sign a treaty that would give substantial autonomy to different Soviet Republics. Due to massive public resistance, the conspirators gave up a few days after the coup had started. Boris Yeltsin, at the time Russian president, vehemently opposed the coup.

27 August


1626 - In the Thirty Years War, a force of Imperialists under Count Tilly heavily defeated a force of Germans and Danes under Christian IV at the battle of Lutter am Barenberge in Germany.

1883 - After several months of smaller eruptions, the Indonesian volcanic island Krakatau (between Java and Sumatra) erupted in a cataclysmic explosion that has been considered one of the most powerful in recorded history. The island exploded with the force of 100 megatons (the Hiroshima bomb was about 20 kilotons). The eruption generated tsunami waves that reached speeds of 400 mph (640 kph).

1972 - United States warplanes bombed North Vietnam's major port at Haiphong for the first time.
