GASTONIA, N.C. (Apr 12) -- AMVETS Post 920, Gastonia, North Carolina, cordially invites America's military men and women to witness the raising and dedication of what it says will be the "Largest Flying American Flag." The ceremony is scheduled for June 12 at 1 p.m. at the AMVETS post, 4025 West Franklin Boulevard (State Route 29/74). The site is one mile west of the Gastonia city limits.
At 114x65 feet, flying from a 225-foot flagpole, and situated on a 47-acre hilltop site, the flag will be able to be seen over a large area extending miles in most directions.
Bradford R. Marker, Post 920's liaison to the Armed Forces, said, "As this flag is raised into the American sky, our hope will be that it will fly forever as the symbol of freedom to the world. It will be a reminder of the sacrifice that so many, from the first patriots to the fallen veterans of our nation, have made throughout the years. By our presence, we recognize this terrible cost that has been paid and assure it will be the standard to which all will rally to the cause of freedom."
Civil Air Patrol Squadrons in the Gastonia plan to offer shuttle service from Gastonia Municipal and Charlotte Douglas Airports to the ceremony.
