April 5, 1869
Daniel Bakeman, the last surviving soldier of the Revolutionary War, died at the age of 109

April 6, 1917
Congress approved a declaration of war against Germany.

April 6, 1945
During World War II, the Japanese warship Yamato and nine other vessels sailed on a suicide mission to attack the U.S. fleet off Okinawa; the fleet was intercepted the next day.

April 9, 1959
In 1959, NASA announced the selection of America's first seven astronauts: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard and Donald Slayton.

April 11, 1945
During World War II, American soldiers liberated Buchenwald, the notorious Nazi concentration camp in Germany.

President Truman relieved Gen. Douglas MacArthur of his commands in the Far East.
