WASHINGTON -- Six major airlines have agreed to waive no-refund policies and trip-change penalties against U.S. service members whose leave travel is affected by Operation Allied Force, according to Air Force officials.
While other companies may still come forward, American, Delta, Midway, Northwest, United and Continental are the initial respondents to an Air Force Air Mobility Command request on behalf of service members affected by the NATO operation.
Airlines sell nonrefundable low-cost fares and charge a fee to make itinerary change. The six airlines agreed to reissue or refund unused travel and to change itineraries free. All have their own effective dates, rules and procedures; the only uniform rule at this time is members need a signed commander's statement or copy of travel orders showing their involvement in Allied Force.
The officials said additional details will be provided as they come available.
They also noted the waivers apply only to air travel, not other losses such as the cost of resort and vacation packages, forfeited deposits and train travel. They suggested affected members inquire with these other companies for details on possible refunds and adjustments. The government doesn't cover any such losses, even if members incur them because of a national emergency or sudden deployment.
