From Dennis Johnson
At last, I can announce that the OJC Ring is ready for operation.
Before we open it up to the current ring and anyone who wants a site in the new ring, I thought it would be nice to get staff ring sites set up.
If someone "stumbles in" and signs up, that is fine as the ring is functional.
There are code samples at http://www.ojc.org/ring
We are doing away with the term webring as it is too likely to cause confusion or be considered proprietary. But all the scripts are here at OJC so this will be the last time ring links need to be changed.
Even if we moved OJC or decided to change any script(s), member HTML would still work fine.
Gunny, you are, of course number 1, Steve #2. The rest will just be low numbers.
BUT NOT TOO LOW. Gunny's is actually 1000001, Steve's is 1000002, etc.. It greatly simplifies things to start with new numbers and by having a leading 1, sort routines are much simpler. We won't run into problems of 23 coming before 3 in a sort for example.
Anyway, its up. We need to organize a mass media announcement with an Update, an announcement in the NL and an email to all current ring members (I'll handle that last one as it has to go through Yahoo!).
Check it out, see if you spot any problems.
Thanks for your patience,
Dennis
List Serv
As you all know by now, the Listserv had been suspended last month for a few days. There were several reasons for this. While we are all volunteers that can walk away from this issue at any time that we want without guilt or ramification of any kind, as an organization there has to be structure. We appreciate that we are all adults with our own minds and opinions. We appreciate differing points of view and lively and even heated debate. When the listserv turns into a forum for vitriol against other members of OJC, then we have to step in and remind the participants that the listserv is not the place for that type of conversation.
Since we were discussing routine maintenance of the listserv anyway, we thought that it would be a good time to bring it down and clean it up. We have done that.
We set-up the listserv to bring about the dissemination and discussion of the POW/MIA issue. It was set up so that our members would have a place to become fairly well versed on the issue. It has taken on a life of its own. Everything is discussed in the listserv and, in fact, not very much POW/MIA issue relative material.
After much discussion, it has been decided that as long as the vitriol is kept off the listserv and we watch our language carefully, we can pretty much discuss whatever we want to discuss on the listserv. We only request that you do not put html or java tags, changing the color of the listserv, and when you are replying to a message, don't quote the entire message. We are trying to filter out headers, but ask that when you forward something to the listserv if you would edit out the headers to make the reading easier for others. Please note that endless forwards to the listserv will be reviewed and possibly removed. This is a work in progress and subject to change. Your cooperation is appreciated.
