This summer, as I was reading the posts to the POW/MIA list server,
I ran across someone and our discussion then led to ICQ. We began
chatting a lot (a woman thing).
We are both mothers of teenage children and we were talking about how
little our children actually have learned in school regarding the Vietnam
Conflict or the POW/MIAs. Our friendship grew and eventually a meet
was set up. We became friends and as Veteran's Day approached we
decided that it might be a good idea to take both kids to the Wall.
They could get a better understanding of what the wall is all about, what
it stands for, and why their moms spend so much time on the net doing work
for this important cause.
We made arrangements and took off that gray day and headed for Washington
DC. It was the first time for both children and my friend to see
the Wall up close. As we arrived in Washington the sun came out,
but the wind was strong. After circling the city to find parking
we walked first to the Washington Monument.
Then we proceeded down the path to the Wall; there were many people
there as it was Veterans Day. The crowds got heavier as we approached
the granite structure. It is an awesome experience no matter how many times
you have been there. The air around the Wall sits still. You
have the feeling of not being alone and you can feel an energy flow from
the Wall. It is difficult to explain; it is a feeling you get.
Flowers and flags were everywhere. There were many people trying
to get rubbings of the names, us included.
The kids were amazed by this site, and I think they came to realize
what it means and how important it is to remember and ask for a full accounting.
To me that was an important discovery for my child to make. Now when he sees me at the computer terminal doing something for OJC he just smiles and nods because he knows it is important!
