Postcard From Bosnia

Received a postcard
just today -
soldiers on a bridge
Trucks crossing the
Sava River.
It looks cold and wet -
you seemed cheerful,
and yet,
and yet -
You said you're sleeping
in a tent
in snow -
The postcard jerked
me back
to another time,
so long ago..
Your postcard marked
"Free"
addressed to me -
How far you are -
another time,
another war -
Take care, my son.
I know the postcard wasn't
really "free" -
you're giving up your freedom
for other folks
like me.
